Throughout human history, there have been multiple plants held in high regard, sometimes even worshipped. Maybe cannabis is the plant of our time. Cannabis is a member of the Cannabaceae family, which contains more than 170 other species such as hops, hackberries, and trema.

Cannabis has hundreds of cannabinoids (compounds); the two most common are CBD and THC. Simply put, both compounds have therapeutic benefits, but CBD does not have the capacity to make you “high” as it is non-psychoactive. THC, on the other hand, is often used recreationally due to its psychoactive abilities (it gets you high).

There is extensive research into CBD improving mental well-being. This report provides evidence for CBD having strong anxiolytic (anxiety-reducing) properties.

How it Works

Every human has an ECS (Endocannabinoid System) which is a key communicator and receptor system that allows for homeostasis (The body’s natural balance). This system plays a vital role in regulating mood, stress, and emotions in the body.

  • Anandamide Boost: Anandamide is known as the “bliss molecule” it helps to regulate mood. Low levels of this molecule have been linked to both anxiety and depression. CBD helps to prevent the breakdown of this molecule, helping to stabalise your mood.
  • Serotonin Interaction: While trying to sound like a mad scientist, CBD gently stimulates the 5-HT1A receptors, the same receptors targeted by SSRIs (Common anti-anxiety medication). This stimulation can promote calmness and reduce stress.
  • Stress Response Reduction: Similar to above, CBD regulates the release of cortisol, also known as the “stress module”. This helps the body to reach its more natural, balanced state.

What the Science Says

In this study published in The Permanente Journal, it found that 79% of participants experienced a reduction of their anxiety within the first month of using CBD. More research needs done on the intracies of CBD & mental well-being, but from what we know now its looking promising.

Usage Guide

  • Start Low: Studies show that starting with a daily dose of around 10–20mg and adjusting based on personal response is best.
  • Choose the Correct Method:
    • Oils & Tinctures – Fast acting, easy to dose
    • Capsules – Convenient and precise
    • Edibles – Slower absorption but often tasty
    • Vape – Quick absorption but with the side effects of vaping
  • Quality Matters: Full-spectrum and broad-spectrum both encapsulate other cannabinoids which can enhance the properties due to the entourage effect.

Potential Side Effects of CBD

While generally CBD is beneficial for individuals, it’s important to note some people may experience side effects such as:

  • Drowsiness or fatigue
  • Appetite changes
  • Digestive issues
  • Nausea
  • Interactions with other medication

Regarding your health, please consult a doctor or other medical professional before you make any changes to discuss your individual needs.
